Snow day

Max obviously had an out-of-body experience
when he found out that school was cancelled indefinitely.

Fellissimo did too, only he's a bit more quiet about it.

Get to know your shoe maker

Dear Manolo,
These are the reasons I love you so:
1. You drink milkshakes.
2. You can not live without plum cake.
3. The way you say vulgaaaar.
4. You wear hot pink flats.
5. You're as sexy as your shoes.

I love Bergdorf Goodman's blog .
I think about it while I'm mucking out the chicken coop.
Grab a coffee and listen to your favorite designer answer 5 questions
Off to wear my vulgar platforms.

Alt Design Summit

I ran away from home to play with pretty things.
I was so amazed by the talented group of people I got to share a few days with at the Alt Design Summit in Salt Lake.
Not only was the fashion inspiring but the sheer talent that these gals have was more than I could handle.
And Mondo was there from Project Runway!
(We all let him know that he was robbed of his win)
I was totally not prepared fashion wise for such a barrage of style gurus.

I got to mingle with some of my favorite bloggers
like Swiss MissMighty Girl, Amy Turn Sharp, and Dooce and I found some new blogs
to spend perusing my day away on. I was in celebrity blogger heaven.
And then I came home to shanty town.

So while I was away Mr. decided to create a shack club house for the boys and neighborhood kids in the back yard.

Our yard transformed to redneck glory.
Is this what it means to live the hi/low lifestyle?

Beans N Corn Bread

Sunday afternoon.
Decided to make black beans and corn bread.
So did Penelope.
Penelope our hen, that is.

What you'll need:
1 cup of yellow cornmeal
1 cup sifted flour
1/4 cup of sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup oil
2/3 cup milk
2 eggs- preferably blue but others colors will do
Preheat the oven to 400

Combine all the dry ingredients together in a bowl.
Mix wet ingredients together and add to dry ingredients.
Do not over mix- just a few strokes will do.
Hold your hen and drink your wine.

Place in greased 9 inch pan.
Bake for 20-25 minutes.

After the cornbread comes out
immediately cut yourself a slice and slap on some butter.

Crumble on top of some hot black beans
and garnish with cilantro.

Cheers! And don't forget to share with you friends.
Feathered or not.

And if you want to do a little jig here's the music.

Crayon art

As a little girl, nothing was as delightful as a
brand new box of crayons.
Remember the smell?
They were perfect each one.
It always took me forever to start.
Each one had a distinct personality
that would spin me off in it's own
particular world.

I always thought
a perfect job for me would be the
official name picker-outer.

As I would sometimes be disappointed by the names
they were given.
Red. Orange. Flesh.
Red really wanted to be Veronica.
Pink really wanted to be Betty.
 Flesh was just thrown out.
In the end it didn't matter what they were called.

All that really mattered was

what you did with them.

You'll find me under the table...

What child adult would not want to play under there?
Super sweet Etsy shop Cool Spaces for Kids
Totally wish listed... for me.

Seafaring Nomads

What to do about the problem?
If you have a moment, please watch the video.
The photography by James Morgan is exquisit and the problem is grand.

People of the Coral Triangle from James Morgan Photography on Vimeo.
The NY Times article summarize the problem.
"His painterly images portray traditional lives. But they also expose the pressures faced by the Bajau to adopt economical but environmentally destructive fishing techniques, like using potassium cyanide. Fear of hardship has put the Bajau at risk of destroying the very reefs that sustain them."

I can only relate with my experience with Rainmaker
It's amazingly difficult to change the way a culture lives.
We learned pretty quickly that our own ideals could not be imposed
on others unless they saw a benefit for them.
Our major obstacles were hunters and loggers.
To this day, we still have both.

They're here...

I'm excited to share the latest collection of Noonies for the spring 2011 line!
Thank you little Kiera for being a marvelous model!

Loafing around

Just in case you can't find your slippers.
Practical and tasty.

Morning

Can we just say that at 9
we are already living the rock star life.
Sorry Max, I'm using this for blackmail in the future.

What's Your Secret?

Your secret from Jean-Sebastien Monzani on Vimeo.

Watching this video and reading the responses at Soul Pancake just solidifies my thoughts that
we are all so alike in our quirky worlds.
I was surprised to read that a lot of the kooky things people do- I do as well.

My secrets...
I have conversations with my hens. I act out both parts though.

And like another person said, when I'm shopping and I accidentally touch clothes that I think are ugly, I immediately wipe my hands off.

One more, when I was a kid I thought I wasn't cool enough to watch
The Electric Company on tv. I would leave the room.
You can imagine my dismay when they started airing it on tv again.
At least I know my kids are cool enough to watch it
and that is a big relief.

Magical Rainbows

Continuing on the rainbow kick
I love this idea.

Just squirt blobs of acrylic paint at the base of the windshield
and voila
a magical rainbow.
How cool would you be if you could make a rainbow
appear out of thin air!

The Khan Academy

One of the things I regret when I went to NYU was
withdrawing out of physics class.
I went there to study film and somehow
ended up in a physics class with 200 others trying to decipher
what the lines and arrows were supposed to be
on the board.
I simply could not understand the professor.
I wanted to so badly because
he was so consumed with love
for physics that how could I not want to know
why he was so excited.

I had never withdrawn out of a class before and that was
the last.
But it still nags at me.
Somewhere in the deep dark recesses
of my brain I must know what that world
he was in was all about.

I've been sneaking some physics classes in over at
If you haven't made your way over to that site
you should.
Because maybe there is a class you
never took
and we can be study pals together.

Manger-in-a- tree

For lack of table top space
we decided to place our nativity scene
in the Christmas tree.
To a 9 and 10-year-old
this seemed like a great idea.
Surprisingly to a 30 something year old,
this seemed equally as exciting.

Some things to note...
-yes, we put baby Jesus in before the big day
because that's how we roll
-yes, that is the "elf on the shelf" on the roof
because he didn't want to be left out
and finally,
if attempting this as well, put the lights
on BEFORE you set it up.

Because we like our holiday decorating
as difficult as possible.

Reality Check

My sentiments exactly...

Tighty Whities

A word to the wise.
Do not buy the same color/brand underwear for your boys
 that your husband wears.
Mr. will not think to check the size label
and will be convinced that you shrunk the laundry.
Strangely, he will wear the mini undies until you ask him
 why he is walking funny.

Wish List #4

Price varies by size

Because it reminds me of my other home.

Wild Letters

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

Garlands

Garlands abound!

and my favorite garland of all...

because we are all stars
